Preparations

Most people prepare for several years for a yoyage like ours. We gave ourselves two months to get ready!

Getting Sulmar 'Ship-shape'

Sulmar was lifted out the water for a weekend to clean and antifoul her hull.

Servicing the saildrive can only be done out of the water.

Communication

To ensure that we would be able to communicate effectively, we installed an MF/HF radio, in addition to our VHF radio and NAVTEX.

In order to be licenced to use our MF/HF radio, we needed a Long Range Certificate.

We did the week-long LRC course at Jewel and Esk Valley College in Edinburgh. This course covers all aspects of GMDSS equipment. JEVC provides a wide range of maritime courses. Please click on their logo for more information.

Provisions

The old saying "An army marches on its stomach" is equally applicable to the crew of a yacht. Our crew need not fear as we are particularly fond of good food, and they will therefore never want for a good meal.

Water

Sulmar has 125 litres of water in two water tanks, plus another 50 litres in bottles.

Food

We will add to this page once we have finalised our provision list

Neither Robin or I are very good at catching fish, so our friend below should be quite safe!
